Welcome to the seventh instalment of our eight hidden gems in and around Manchester.
These are places which might not initially crop up on your itinerary when planning a trip to the city, as you might never heard of them, but you definitely don’t want to miss out on seeing them.
So far, we’ve visited Museum Of Transport, Manchester Jewish Museum, Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, Chetham’s Library, Working Class Movement Library and Greater Manchester Police Museum. We’re now heading to a building solely dedicated to Manchester’s revolutionary Suffragette movement – The Pankhurst Centre.
What is it?
The Pankhurst Centre is located in the family home of Emmeline Pankhurst, the birthplace of the Suffragette movement. It is an iconic part of Suffragette history, and is the very place where the first Suffragette meetings were held.
The Pankhurst Centre is one of Manchester’s most iconic landmarks, and attract hundreds of visitors every single year, keen to find out more about women’s right to vote and how the Suffragette movement came around.
Restoration work on the home started in 1984, in an attempt to convert it to not only a museum exploring the rich history of the Pankhurst family, but also as a women’s centre to help support the local Manchester community. In recent years, the Pankhurst Trust merged with Manchester Women’s Aid, to act as a force for understanding and promoting the historic links between women’s suffrage and the inequalities still faced today.
It really is a fascinating and empowering place, complete with a museum housing artefacts honouring the Pankhurst family. At the end of your visit, you’re invited to the museum shop to purchase some feminist gifts and Suffragette, themed goodies with all proceeds going towards continuing the Trust’s vital work towards women’s equality and maintaining the museum.
Where is it?
The Pankhurst Centre is located opposite Manchester Royal Infirmary main entrance, just off Oxford Road on Nelson Street. It’s easily accessible by buses and trains.
