2,000 Years of Manchester History and Sport in Two Hours
A Special Birthday Trip With Manchester Taxi Tours

From Castlefield to the Crusty Cob, then onwards to visit Manchester Velodrome and Cathedral Gardens, husband and wife Mary and Brian had a wonderful time on their recent Manchester Taxi Tour.

Five years ago, Mary’s brother and sister-in-law were some of Manchester Taxi Tours’ first clients. After hearing great things about the service, Mary and Brian chose to mark a special birthday in spring 2015, with a taxi tour around the city they’ve known and loved for decades.

Their tour took them on an intriguing journey through the city streets, allowing the couple to visit a diverse array of places. It covered 2,000 years of Manchester history and served up a selection of the city’s sporting venues in just two hours.

Mary and Brian’s tour took the couple from Roman Manchester to the present day, and even allowed them and a glimpse into the future of the city.

They visited Castlefield, with Manchester’s Roman Fort, which was founded around AD79. Also in Castlefield, they saw the Bridgewater canal, built in the 1760s to form the first purpose-built industrial canal to bring coal into Manchester, learning about how Manchester is built on three rivers. On the theme of infrastructure, they also witnessed the oldest passenger railway station in the world at Liverpool Road – now the home of the Museum of Science and Industry.

This tour also featured visits to historical buildings such as Manchester town hall, the medieval cathedral (built around the 1420s), and other landmarks buildings. It explored the start of industrialisation in the city, including Ancoats – the world’s first industrial suburb and home of the oldest steam-powered cotton mills. It even factored in time for a spot of lunch at the world-famous Crusty Cob.

After a hearty lunch, Mary and Brian’s journey continued to the richest football club in the world – Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium (48,000 seats but currently being extended to 60,000). This stadium was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and has been the home of MCFC since 2003. The tour took in the Etihad campus, which features new training facilities, a 7,000-seater stadium and 16 full-sized football pitches – a lasting legacy of the Commonwealth Games. Then more sport was the order of the day, with a visit to Manchester Velodrome and BMX centre at the home of British cycling, followed by the National Football museum at Urbis.
