Arguably one of the most commonly asked questions in Manchester, and one which will forever continue to spark endless debates. It will never be clear whether Manchester is more red or blue, but one thing is for sure, this city is passionate about football.
Founded two years before Manchester City, Manchester United was on the scene first, as was their iconic ground. Old Trafford opened all the way back in 1910 and currently holds a capacity of 75, 635 people. As the third largest stadium in the UK, Old Trafford is certainly a sight to behold, which is what makes it such a popular visit on our Manchester Taxi Tours.
Whether you’re a Manchester United fan or not, visiting Old Trafford is a memorable experience for all. Not only can you feast your eyes on the incredible building where United have won countless numbers of home games, but Manchester United also offer special tour packages to take you in and around the stadium, as well as a look at the famous Old Trafford Museum. With over 130 years history behind the the team, there’s certainly a lot to learn about Manchester United in there.
However, Manchester Taxi Tours likes to take it one step further, and offers a custom built tour which will take you to se where the club made their history with your very own eyes. For example, we offer visits to Newton Heath, just outside of the city centre, where the club was first founded in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR F.C. and it wasn’t until 1902 that they became Manchester United F.C.
Newton Heath is of course home to the Busby Babes housing estate also, with their streets named after the Busby Babes who died in the 1958 Munich air crash. Amongst them are Roger Byrne Close, Eddie Colman Close and Duncan Edwards Court. The final resting place of Eddie Colman at Weaste Cemetery, and Southern Cemetery, where Sir Matt Busby was buried can also be visited.
Also included in the Manchester United tour are visits to the old second home ground of the team, Bank Street in Clayton, as well as their previous training ground in Salford, The Cliff and their current, Trafford Training Centre.
Other popular stops along the way include the location in Sale where George Best opened his own fashion boutique as well as his two Manchester nightclubs, Oscar’s and Slack Alice’s (now called 42nd Street Nightclub). Of course, there’s Rio Ferdinand’s own Italian restaurant based in the city centre, Rosso, as well as other restaurants and bars popular amongst the United players, including Panacea, Living Room and San Carlo. You never know, you might even bump into one of them…
