Castlefield was the site of the Roman era fort of Mamucium (or Mancunium), which gave its name to Manchester, protected by the Rivers Irwell and Medlock, and remains now only in ruins. It’s also home to the world’s first industrial canal, Bridgewater Canal, built in 1764 and followed by the oldest canal warehouse in 1779. Regeneration of Castlefield begun in 1972,. Most of the area’s historic canals and buildings were derelict by 1979, and £40m was invested into the regeneration of Castlefield in 1983 to become Britain’s first Urban Heritage Park. Today, most of the buildings have been renovated and restored, transforming Castlefield into a popular hub of urban life, packed with modern apartments, bars and restaurants in a tranquil setting, whilst managing to retain some of its fascinating history with its network of canals and old mills.
