One of the most notable events in the history of the University of Manchester is the "splitting of the atom" by Ernest Rutherford, resulting in a huge scientific breakthrough and the development of nuclear power.

Other famous faces ingrained in the history of Manchester University include Catherine Chisholm, the first female graduate of medicine, philosopher Samuel Alexander and the creator of modern computing, Alan Turing, who along with a team of mathematicians, went on to develop the first electronic computer.

Manchester Academy

You don’t need to walk far from the University of Manchester for some live music entertainment, as Manchester Academy is right around the corner. Composed of four music venues all located on the University campus, Manchester Academy hosts an array of concerts from up-and-coming bands and artists.

Whitworth Art Gallery

With around 55,000 items in its collection, Whitworth Art Gallery is definitely worth a visit. Not only does the museum display a beautiful collection of art, but after a £15 million redevelopment in 2015, the venue itself boasts some stunning must-see architecture. Not just your standard art gallery, Whitworth is integrated with the great outdoors, with a fully bespoke designed art garden, sculpture terrace and orchard garden which is a welcome addition to the venue.

The Bridgewater Hall
