Any trip to the Northern Quarter wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Afflecks. The department store with a difference houses over 70 individual independent indoor market stalls, selling everything from fashion to fancy dress, retro games to vinyls and home ware to craft shops – basically all the cool, quirky novelty items you’d ever wish to find under one roof. You can even get a piercing or tattoo while there, for a long lasting memory of what is a truly unique experience visiting Afflecks.

One for the art lovers. Manchester Craft and Design Centre is located inside a former Victorian fishmarket building, and showcases a huge variety of contemporary visual art, craft and design. Their free exhibitions and events are well worth a visit, and a variety of workshops are on offer for a fun and creative day out.

One of the best nights out in Manchester can be spent in Band on the Wall, a hugely popular live music venue, hosting a variety of regular jazz and world music gigs. The venue is well famed for its shows and clubnights, playing host to various DJ’s such as BBC Radio 6 Music presenter Craig Charles who puts on a sell-out Funk and Soul show every month.

If cats and coffee are two of your favourite things, then this is the place for you. Manchester’s cat café opened in 2016 and houses 10 lovely kitties, in a friendly environment where people can sit back and relax with some coffee and cake. There’s limited capacity though, for obvious health and safety reasons, so it’s worth booking in advance if you’re hoping to pay a visit.

There’s more choice than you could ever need in the Northern Quarter when it comes to eating and drinking. Feast on a burger at Almost Famous or Solita, or grab a slice at Dough Pizza Kitchen. Home Sweet Home has some of the best brunch options around, and Sugar Junction offers a fantastic selection of sweet treats.

Wash it all down with a drink or two in some of the Northern Quarters great bars. Whether it’s a cocktail at Apotheca or a craft beer in The Crown and Kettle, there’s sure to be something to refresh your taste buds. For a truly unique experience, head to movie-themed Bar 21 where you’ll be surrounded by fascinating memorabilia from productions such as The Rocky Horror Show, while enjoying a tipple from their impressive drinks selection.
