Heaton Park situated in north Manchester is one of the largest municipal parks in Europe. Formerly the home of the Wilton family the park retains many of its original buildings with Heaton Hall (James Wyatt 1772 ) designed and built for Sir Thomas Egerton the 1st Earl of Wilton and described by Pevsner as ‘one of the finest buildings of its period in the country ‘. Dower House,Temple , stables and gate houses . The estate was purchased in 1902 by Manchester City Council .
The park attracts many visitors due to its variety of sporting attractions ~ boating lake ,18 hole golf course ,18 hole pitch and putt , bowling greens , stables and farmyard ,children’s playground.
Every Saturday morning around 300 people meet at the Lions to take part in the parkrun a great way to see the park and keep fit .
The wide open spaces provide walks through formal gardens and woodland trails ,two cafes provide refreshments and places to relax .
