A tour of Manchester through the ages

The Roman fort of Mancunium was established in 79 AD on the banks of the River Medlock. For nearly two millennia the ruins were left relatively untouched until the city began to expand during the Industrial Revolution.

Our tour takes you to Castlefield Urban Heritage Park, which includes a section of the fort’s wall, gatehouse and other ancillary buildings, along with more recent notable developments like the Rochdale Canal and Great Northern Railway also the world's first passenger railway.

Following that, you can experience how the Georgian era brought significant expansion and development to the city. The establishment of St Ann's Church in 1709 was the first major planned development outside the historical medieval confines. Experience this iconic building and more as we move from Castlefield into the centre of Manchester.

Manchester is widely regarded as the world's first industrial city, and evidence of this illustrious past is everywhere you look. Take in the densely packed mills & warehouses of Ancoats, and the residential areas that housed the thousands of daily workers - all of which transformed lives across the world.

The city is constantly reinventing itself, and as such, you’ll also gain an appreciation for the modern, vibrant city of today. Easily commutable, 21st century Manchester is around two hours from London via train and people have started to move back into the city centre. It also boasts the largest university campus in Europe, making the city young, buzzing and bustling - full of cultural experiences across areas like Chinatown, the ‘Curry Mile’ and the Gay Village.

How our Manchester city tour works

Once your tour has been booked and arranged, we will pick you up from an arranged location in our electric black cab before embarking on a 3-4 hours tour of the city centre.
