Manchester has been strongly associated with music for decades. Embedded in the industrial revolution, the city’s music scene sparked a platform for the working class.
Post-industrialisation and the cotton industry, there was a lack of work for young people. In 1976, Sex Pistols played in Manchester which inspired many other bands such as Joy Division and The Smiths to follow suit. Independent recording company Factory Records was formed in 1978 and became pivotal to the music scene in Manchester. Following this, the iconic Hacienda was established.
